Like everything else in this confounding and bizarre year, the 2020 MM+M Awards is different. The actual ceremony — in a normal year, the boisterous highlight of the medical marketing social calendar — was a virtual event. And while people typically go to great lengths to look fabulous for a night out at Cipriani on Wall Street, this year we were all comfortable in our best Zoom-ready shirts and dresses.
But a few things haven’t changed, and probably never will. First, the superb quality of the work. The work represented here was largely produced before COVID-19 reached the U.S., but much of what you’ll see addresses issues that were important before the pandemic and have only been amplified since.
Also unchanged is the dedication shown by our panel of more than 80 judges. If you’ve ever served as a judge for an awards panel, you know how much time and work can go into screening each entry, and then discussing the merits of the work with your peers on the category panels. While it’s true that there is sometimes work that stands head-and-shoulders above the rest, more often than not the judges are required to make tough decisions. That scrutiny is part of the reason an MM+M Award means so much.
Finally, our sponsors. In a year in which everything has been turned upside down, our sponsors have stayed the course and supported this important work. Creativity knows no bounds, but commerce sometimes can. Thanks to our partners, commerce continues to support creativity, which in turn can drive commerce.
And to all of you, thank you. Here’s hoping we see each other, in person, all dolled up, and soon. Until then, stay safe and healthy.
